I read it in college and really enjoyed it. It's incredibly strange and surreal but there's some brilliant satire and some truly magical moments. I wouldn't call Bulgakov Orthodox, but even his brand of heterodoxy was a welcome relief from the soulless literature of Communist officialdom. I highly recommend reading Simon Franklin's introduction to the Everyman's Library edition.
